Of local interest
The news that Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was being ordered to jail drew staff from the Detroit Convention and Visitors Bureau to TVs in the Media Center.
"People are talking about it," said Renee Monforton, director of communications, "but fortunately, the national media are not as concerned. It's more distracting locally than it is for national media here.
"People are here for the golf and they're enjoying the beauty of Oakland Hills and its challenges. The only ones talking about it are the local media."

-----------
Eye on style
Several people broke the mold from shorts and collared golf shirts at Thursday's event.
Jeff and Kay Whitehead of Houston stood out. Kay wore a white-and-orange jacket and carried a bag with camel-colored accents. Jeff -- a police officer -- was casually elegant in a white shirt and tan pants.
Kay, an interior designer, reported she had outfits packed for the rest of the tournament.
She confided, "I'm a shopaholic."

-----------
Choose shoes wisely
A woman wearing fashionable flats began sliding downhill near the steep slope behind the 18th hole green midday Thursday and had to be grabbed by spectators to keep from rolling into the crowd seated on the hill. While looking good is always fun, it makes more sense to wear athletic shoes around that hole.

-----------
White choice
White was the theme selected by a stylish foursome -- Carreen and Jerry Reso and Carolyn and Earl Weiser -- from New Orleans. The women wore broad-brimmed hats they'd bought at the U.S. Women's Open in Southern Pines, N.C., in 2007.
"We all play golf, too," Carolyn said.

-----------
Just for the occasion
Bob Jameyfield of Belleville was probably the only spectator wearing a shirt decorated with Winnie the Pooh and Tigger playing golf.
"I've had this shirt 10 or 15 years," said Jameyfield, as he headed toward a grandstand.
"My kids probably bought it for me," he said.
Asked if he wore the shirt often, he laughed.
"Not every day," he said.
"I have other shirts."
