O'Mara was the top finisher at Saturday's Third Annual Kayla O'Mara Memorial 10K race, an annual event that honors the memory of Erin O'Mara's younger sister. Kayla O'Mara, who was an integral member of the Goodrich girls Division 3 back-to-back State Cross Country champions in 2004 and 2005, died tragically in a car accident on January 24, 2006. While the older O'Mara was happy that she won Saturday's race, she admitted afterward that winning the day's competition was not the only thing on her mind. "Winning isn't really important," Erin O'Mara said. "It's more important to me to just be able to participate in this race every year and to remember (Kayla). There are a lot of people her who knew my sister and some people who did not but are aware of her legacy. "To see everyone come out and honor her is what makes this day real special." Besides winning the 10K race on Saturday, the 24-year old O'Mara also competed in the 5K race, where she finished in sixth place with a time of 19:21.65. The 10K race was also the Road Racers Club of America state championship race. After the race, O'Mara commented on the fine weather conditions that the runners had for the day. "The weather was fine today," O'Mara said. "The fog cleared away as the race went on. And this course we use is a good course with a lot of good scenery. "And although winning the race was not the most important thing to me today, winning this race does mean a lot to me." For the men's 10K race, Oxford's Adam Frezza was the top area finisher, coming in second place with a time of 31:47.85. On the women's side, Jennifer Brothers from Goodrich came in fifth (44:26.60), Ortonville's Kayla Doan finished in sixth (44:50.35) and Lapeer's Jennifer Schmidt ended in seventh place (46:43.05).
