NEW! A good cause: Second Annual Mayville Alumni baseball game raises money for high school field

MAYVILLE -- Forty-five former Mayville High School baseball players turned out for the 2nd Annual Mayville Alumni Baseball Game, which was held on the Mayville High School baseball field on Saturday, June 21.

The initial game was organized last season by Chris Yens, Russ Croutcher and Eric Frenzel as a way to raise funds for some much-needed work that needs to be done to the high school's baseball field.

"We had new dugouts put in a few years ago," former Mayville varsity baseball coach Curt Henderson said. "But the rest of the field needs a lot of work. We started that work here a year ago after last year's game and we hope to be able to do that again.

"That's what brings all these guys together."

Of the forty-five players who showed up to play in the game, nine were former All-Staters for the Wildcats back in their respective playing days. But according to Henderson, the biggest star of the afternoon was not one of his former ballplayers, but instead 1938 Mayville graduate Erwin Craig.

"Center stage belonged to Mr. Craig," Henderson said. "He threw out the ceremonial first-pitch to get the day's games underway. And then, he even played four innings at second base in one of the games.

"And, he stepped to the plate and beat out an infield single."

In Craig's at-bat, 1993 All-State pitcher Scott Frenzel could not get his fastball past Craig, as the 1938 grad put the bat on the ball and ended his day 1-for-1 with the infield single.

For the day, the forty-five former players were divided into four teams, and each team played two games, following a tournament format.

"The competitive spirit and pride surfaced in each team," Henderson said. "But in the end, the score did not matter as everyone was thrilled to get together with old friends and relive fun times.

"It was a great day of baseball in Mayville and the players are already talking about getting ready for next year."
