In Lapeer County, the jobless rate jumped from 9 percent in April to 9.8 percent in May. In total, according to the Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth, there were 4,400 Lapeer County residents looking for work in May.

State figures indicate there were 40,250 Lapeer County residents employed in May.

By comparison, in May 2007 the unemployment rate in Lapeer County was 7.9 percent.

The May unemployment rates for area counties were as follows:

  • Oakland: 7.2 percent
  • Macomb: 8.8 percent
  • St. Clair: 9.7 percent
  • Lapeer: 9.8 percent
  • Tuscola: 9.9 percent
  • Sanilac: 10.7 percent
  • Genesee: 11.1 percent

The primary reason for these increases was the large number of students and seasonal workers who entered the labor market looking for work.

Due to the overall sluggish conditions in the economy, many of these entrants were unable to find work. Still, some jobseekers were able to find jobs in one of several seasonal industries, including construction, retail trade, and leisure and hospitality. Although job gains in these industries were smaller than expected, they were the result of continued seasonal hiring.
