Local News PUBLISHED:
Schlaud had worked as deputy clerk for the township for six years. "I felt very uncomfortable," Davis said about her action toward Schlaud calling it an "awkward" situation. "Our desks were three feet apart." Mayfield Township Supervisor Ron Dillon said he wasn't taking sides in the situation, but said it could reflect negatively on the township there. "Some people don't understand. The clerk and treasurer are required to appoint deputies. The clerk and treasurer are the only ones who can discharge them," Dillon said. "It's part of the General Law and Charter Township Act. The board has no say." Termination of Schlaud's employment by Davis with the township is not unusual, said Evelyn David, spokesperson for the Michigan Township Association. "It's a personal choice. I've been here 20 years and it's not unusual," David said. "The board has the power of the pocketbook, but can't make the pick." Schlaud could not be reached for comment. To fill the empty deputy position, Davis temporarily appointed her daughter, Allison Smith, for the $10 an hour position that should last until mid-August. Davis said she doesn't think her actions will affect her re-election chances. "I don't think it will affect me," she said. "I think my past reputation will carry me."
