Local News PUBLISHED:
According to a news release from the association, the majority of art found in the gallery is realistic. This time association members were encouraged to let their imaginations run wild. Caren Huizenga of Hadley is a four-year member of the association and will have a piece in the exhibit. She is also a 27-year Hadley resident. "Members had to include five of 10 items in their piece from such items as an egg, silverware, fiber, a face, a handprint, flowers, lettering, and a candle," she said. "I've had a really good time with it. We can enter three pieces in the competition." Huizenga's artwork usually is in clay. "My pieces are different shaped bowls and dishes," she said. "Clay has so many possibilities. I also do watercolor, murals, and drawing." An art teacher at Valley School in Flint, she has a bachelor of arts degree in art from Oakland University. Huizenga said the association does not yet know how many artists will have pieces in the exhibit. "The work doesn't have to be abstract, which refers to non-representational work. It's imaginative," she said. The public will be able to vote for their favorite piece in the exhibit and are encouraged to do so. A People's Choice Award will be given and monetary reward will be given to the artist receiving the most votes. Huizenga said she thought people are becoming more aware of art through the current movement that's going on in Lapeer County. "The lower part of Gallery 194 has revolving shows and I think that makes people more aware of it," she said. "I think it should be an interesting show and should be fun. Vote for your favorite thing." Jennifer Decker can be reached at (810) 664-0811, Ext. 8125 or jennifer.decker@lapeergroup.com.
